a makeshift marilyn moment

One more post from my trip to NYC last month!

My mom and I were walking around Central Park, and we were trying to figure out where to go next.  I grew up on Long Island which means I have been to NYC more times than I can count, so we don’t typically do many touristy things.

However, my mom said to me, “I think the Marilyn Monroe subway grate isn’t too far from here…”  I don’t know what made her think of that out of the blue, but I thought it was a great idea!

It was an even BETTER idea once I realized that the skirt I happened to be wearing was from Macy’s Marilyn Monroe line!  After a quick Google search on my phone, we were headed to Lexington and 52nd.

The location didn’t seem as glamorous as one would be led to believe.  (especially with that dude awkwardly running across the street!)

The grate was right outside of L’Entrecôte, a French steak house.  We couldn’t get any photos with the building in the background, since my mom would have had to stand in the middle of traffic, haha.

As I stood there (and a few restaurant employees peeked out through the window), I wondered…”How often do they see people doing this?  Is this a common occurrence? ”

I read online that the breeze comes up through the grate when the subway passes, so I imagined that I wouldn’t have to wait very long.

Well, we waited….and waited…and waited….

C’mon…where’s the wind?

I think we were there for at least 15 minutes.  It might not seem like a long time, but remember that I was literally doing nothing, standing in one spot, while my mom stood by with a camera.  It seemed like an eternity, and honestly I felt quite silly!

I wasn’t sure what to do since we had waited all that time for a little gust of wind.

Well, when faced with a problem, a girl’s just got to improvise!

I unashamedly pulled up my skirt with one hand while pushing it down with the other.   At least a cab drove by at that exact moment, for a much needed pop of color and New York authenticity.

What’s funny is that just last week, as luck would have it, I had a REAL Marilyn moment during the photo shoot for my last post.  I guess things just never work out the way you plan.

I hope you can see the adorable Marshmallow Fluff pin I was wearing.  I got this last winter at the Eat Boutique Holiday Market in Allston.  I spotted it right away in the Loyal Supply Co. booth and knew I had to have it!

I hope this doesn’t make me a poser, but I don’t even like Fluff.  Crazy, I know!  But Fluff was invented in the nearby city of Somerville (just next to Cambridge), so I like that it is a local brand.  Plus it’s so cute!   For you Boston-area Fluff lovers out there, don’t forget to attend Somerville’s What the Fluff? Festival this (and every) fall!

I’ll leave you with one more photo from when we were in the park, just because I think it came out nice 🙂

This post is so gosh darn adorable. I love that you and your mom waited at the grate! Well, the outfit looks adorable and if a breeze did occur, I wonder if it would have just ruffled your feathers a bunch. Haha I love the fluff pin! Too cute!!

Hehe, thanks Sara! We looked pretty silly just waiting around, but it was still fun. If you love Fluff you should totally go to the Fluff festival! Have you ever been? Even as a non-Fluff eater, I still think it might be cool to check out sometime. Have a fab week! 🙂

Oh my goodness, the photo of you looking into the grate like “wind? where are you?!” is just too cute! I love it! And I’m sorry you didn’t get your Marilyn moment – but it is pretty awesome that you found the grate and did a post featuring a skirt from the Marilyn line!
