day out to workout

split screen

As I write this, it is 20 degrees out and we are having a snowstorm.

It feels wrong to be posting these photos from August, but I realized I never shared them and now seemed like a good time to get them up.

You may know already that I have been learning hip hop dance for about a year and a half, and I now take 2 different classes: an intermediate class and a beginner crew.  It has been so great to bond and grow with the other dancers, and I am so excited that our winter session is starting in a few days! Woo!

My classes are in the evening, so I often need to wear something in the day that I can quickly transition for a workout.

The best way to do this is by having an item that works for both looks.  In this case, it’s my tank top.

Although it is CLEARLY an active top (stretchy material, mesh details), I think it looks cute with my skirt!  And the necklace really helps…accessories can transform an otherwise athletic look.

I didn’t want to have to change my bra before class, so I wore a sports bra with neon details.  I could have just as easily worn a black sports bra, but my skirt is bright and colorful so it was nice to have a bit of that peeking through the top as well.

To flip the look, I changed into workout capris (though I definitely could have worn them under the skirt for an even simpler switch), put on some high top sneakers. and slapped on my favorite hat.

By the way, my hat is from an AWESOME game called Prey.  It takes place on a space station orbiting earth and you have to kill aliens, help survivors, and try to escape.  It is set in the future, but has an alternate history where JFK was not assassinated (which changes the whole Space Race).

I don’t always pay close attention to the storyline when I play games, but this one sucked me in.  I finished it back in May, but now I want to play it again so I can make different decisions and alter my game ending.

And just because I’m a doof, I’m going to leave you with two strange photos…I really just did these to entertain Dave while he was taking the pics 🙂

diy christmas dress

Well, I did it again.

Simplicity 1419, that is.

I have to admit. I’m a little embarrassed by the fact that I have sewn this pattern so many times.  Here, here, and two more that are not yet blogged.  And now here comes the fifth version!

Every time I make this dress, I adjust the pattern in some way. Here, I drafted a v-neckline for it, and switched to a full gathered skirt (instead of the pleated skirt it comes with).

I know this pattern so well that I no longer have to read the directions! It makes the dress come together much more quickly, and I can ensure that I won’t have any mistakes along the way.

I thought it would be funny to pose with this giant Lindt ball that a student got my for Christmas.  It’s filled with regular Lindt truffles – my students know me so well!  I love edible gifts 🙂

Dave and I took these photos on Christmas morning in NJ, where we were staying with his parents….and it was COLD!  Jeez, this seems to be the theme of the season, huh? (though when is it not?!?)

Just when I thought the Lindt ball was the best large prop I could pose with, I noticed the ornaments on the tree.  Woooh! Even better! 🙂 hehe

There is a cute little gazebo near the center of the town where they live, and it was the perfect backdrop. I adore the sweet garland and all of the lights. I’ll bet this looks lovely at night!

Dave and I had a wonderful Christmas, and if you celebrate I hope yours was good as well!  Keep scrolling for some detail shots of the dress, and I plan to be back with a new post soon 🙂

When Sara and I heard that Modern Millie Shop was going to have a holiday shopping party, we knew we had to go!  She has a lot of Christmas-themed outfits, and I wanted to wear a themed look as well.  The only problem was that I don’t have any clothes that are specifically for Christmas!

Then, I saw this adorable fabric at Jo-Ann’s and couldn’t resist. The silver, red and green are classic Christmas, and I love that the wreaths have holly and snowflakes.

I tried my best to match the print, starting with the full wreath at each side seam. Because of the darting in the pattern there was no way to get it perfect, but I thought it was a good effort:

I also matched the side seams on the skirt…

…which helped to conceal the pockets:

I thought I had everything measured out perfectly when I cut out my fabric, until I got to the zipper in the back.  I was SO bummed to discover that I was just a fraction of an inch off. 😦

When you look quickly you can’t really tell, but it sure is obvious on second inspection.

Do any of you sewists out there have tips for matching prints?

frozen treats and secret eats

Wow, two posts within one week?!  Haha.

I’m happy to finally be getting some older photos up on the blog – these ones are from October.  It must have been a warm day though, since it looks like I was dressed for summer!

Well, I just checked and it was in the high 70s that day!  That explains the lack of coat or tights 🙂

Dave and I had plans that evening to visit Less Than Greater Than, a little secret speakeasy hidden in an ice cream shop.  They surprisingly had amazing food and drinks, and we had such a great time!

We knew we were going to end up getting some ice cream at some point that night, so I wore my ModCloth popsicle dress, Betsey Johnson popsicle clutch, and a little ice cream pin.

I have had this dress for over a year, and I can’t believe I haven’t blogged it yet!  It is in fairly consistent rotation, even in the winter.  Just add a pair of thick tights and you’re good to go!

I wore pretty much this exact outfit last December when we were in Orlando for Christmas.  I’m really only mentioning that so I can share this adorable pic with my niece, below 🙂

Well, that’s it for me today.  I’ve got to get back to addressing Christmas cards! Have a wonderful weekend 🙂

cold and awkward

Yep, that definitely sums up my life – cold and awkward.

These photos were taken a few weeks ago in Salem during an outing with Sara and Cody. We love those guys so much, so it’s always a blast when we get together.  The plan was to hit up an exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum, then visit one of our favorite clothing shops, Modern Millie.

Sara was kind enough to take some photos of me, but I will admit to being the worst model!  Once the coat came off, I couldn’t stop shivering (and complaining, lol).  My nose got red, my eyes were watery, and I was getting self-conscious as people were walking by.  Augh.

Luckily (and likely because she is a good photographer/pose coach), we managed to get a few good ones.SARA5397-smallSARA5441-sma

This dress was actually a birthday gift from Sara, and my second Bernie Dexter! This style is the Rachel, and although the same size as my Kelly (XS), this one fits a lot smaller – which is good since my Kelly is a bit big. Ideally though, I think I would want one right in between the two.  More fitted than the Kelly, with a bit more breathing room than the Rachel (ha!). Funny that the sizes vary so much within the same brand!

We had a great time at the museum.  I had been dying to see an exhibit titled, “It’s Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection.”

Kirk Hammett?! I have been a HUGE Metallica fan since elementary school (my first two live shows were Metallica, who I saw in 5th and 6th grade).  I have seen them a bunch of times since then, and although they had a few misses (St. Anger? lol), I have remained a fan.  Kirk Hammett is the lead guitarist for the band, so I knew it was an exhibit I couldn’t miss. Plus, I love the aesthetic of the whole horror movie genre.

The exhibit did not disappoint!

Sara and I posed outside of Modern Millie too, before we headed in to shop.  I bought two ADORABLE dresses that I can’t wait to share here!  Until then, you can check out Sara’s post from our day in Salem.
