a non-costume costume

I have mentioned my love of cosplay on this blog once before, but I figure I might as well explain myself in case this is your first time here!  My husband and I have been seriously into costumes since college, and we will take any opportunity we can to make and wear them!

Usually, this happens 3 times per year:  Halloween, New York Comic Con, and PAX East.  However, when a friend of ours announced that her birthday party was going to be a costume party, we knew we had to whip up something new!

I recently started watching the anime Bleach, and although the story progresses quite slowly, I’m enjoying it.  The main character is Ichigo Kurosaki, who becomes a substitute Soul Reaper.  I won’t delve more into the plot in case you are interested in watching/reading, plus I’ve really only scratched the surface myself – I still have hundreds more episodes to catch up on (oh my, I doubt it will hold my interest for that long!  I like my anime series nice and short…)

I decided to adapt his costume into something that felt party-appropriate.   I started with a simple black dress, belt, boots, socks, a cheap mask from Amazon, and a wig and katana that I already owned.  (haha, yes – we have quite the variety of wigs and prop weapons in our apartment – don’t you?!?)

My favorite parts of the costume are the sweet bow in the back of the dress and the makeup.  As you may have noticed, I don’t usually wear a lot of makeup – so it was fun to go all out with a dramatic eye and lipstick!

Wouldn’t that be fun?! I like the orange hair too 🙂 I think the only problem would be the upkeep – I’m kind of lazy when it comes to coloring my hair, lol.

I LOVE when you share your costumes! You are so good at putting them together. I love them as much as I love your cards and stamps!!

Thank you so much Kimberly! I’ve been working on my costume for NY Comic Con, so I’ll be excited to share that in October too 🙂
